REVIEWING THE COURSE SO FAR

During the Fashion course I have learnt a lot, At the start of the course we focused on fashion through the years and how style has changed and why certain fashion trends occurred, We’ve looked at contemporary fashion and designers such as issey miyake and historical European fashion. I also looked at designers like Mary Quant and her influence on the mini skirt, and Christian Dior’s full skirts taking advantage of the increased fabric quantities, and looked into research on contemporary designers Issey Miyake and Dion Lee.

Practical work we starting doing at the start of the course included using an industrial machine, setting the machine up, using an over locker, and practicing curved seams and corners. These practical workshops have helped me gain not only knowledge but also confidence when using the machines, enabling me to use them to better the quality of the garments I’ll come to make.

After researching eras and designers we had to choose something that inspired us and or our style/fashion preference. I chose the 1970/80s fashion, as I love the style of the era, I love the bold colours, jumpsuits, and wacky prints. I focused on celebrity fashion influences in the 70s including Dolly Parton. I gathered photos of her in different jumpsuits and took parts of each jumpsuit I liked for example the wide leg/bell bottoms and applied it to my own designs, either drawn up or on illustrator.
Aside from celebrity influence I also used photos of my family in the 70s/80s including my nans, mum and auntie to get a wider range of fashion worn in this era. My family photos gave me more correct knowledge of the year I was worn and allowed ne to connect more to the photos, fashion and style of garments. I took from these photos an understanding of 70s fashion, patterns, and colours and as able to use some of them in designing my own jumpsuit.

After this project we moved on to the skirt project. This project involved us having to research architecture we were interested in enabling us to use parts to include in our skirts, whether it is the form, size colours or design. I researched some interesting buildings and chose a building with allot of lines, these lines where mostly on the ceiling linking over one another to represent a sun shape. I chose then to link my skirt to the shape of the sun being them main detail.  We then researched fastenings, and colours which I chose to use pink, blue and yellow for a spring/summer vibe.

CURVED EDGE

The top section of my skirt is a separate piece resembling a 'sun'. The semi circle piece has to be sewn in connecting both sections. I find sewing this piece quite difficult as the corners are quite fidely to match up but once notches are added in and i get control of the machine at a slow pace I managed to match it up correctly.

My first attempt at the curved seam wasn't very successful as the pieces didn't match up exactly so i unpicked it and restarted.
